Lessons

Classical Guitar — this was my focus in school, and I highly encourage anyone to take up this beautiful instrument.  If you don’t have a classical guitar we can work on getting you one.  Whether you’re already a lover of classical music or not yet acquainted, playing classical guitar is a great way to connect with music of the past.  Actually, entire worlds of music, both past and present, are represented on this instrument — very exciting.

Guitar — whatever your favorite genre of music, if you want to use a steel string acoustic or electric guitar to play, I can show you how.  I’m deeply interested in pop and rock music, and experienced with teaching beginners and more advanced players.

Ear Training/Theory — If you want to be able to name what it is you’re hearing, and be able to describe music in somewhat concrete terms, consider in-depth study of theory and ear training.  A good idea if you want to apply theoretical knowledge to the guitar, to improve writing and improvisation.

How I Teach

I’m a friendly and supportive teacher who helps people find and reach their musical goals.  I emphasize musical listening skills, which are often underdeveloped in beginner and intermediate students.  In order to maximize their efforts, I train students to practice with a purpose — no mindless playing allowed!  As much as possible, we use material that is based on the student’s musical interests.

I am also a certified teacher of Alexander Technique, an approach to posture and movement mechanics that is very relevant for musicians.  My teaching approach is greatly informed by this method, which can be further incorporated into lessons on request.
