About John

I got my start playing my two older brothers’ guitars, picking up the basics from them, and taking advantage of their large collection of CDs and guitar magazines.  Eventually, I picked up the classical guitar and started lessons with George Yeatman, who was a great friend and continues to be an inspiration.

I studied with Brian Roberts at Wayne State University, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in 2009. Brian is a dedicated teacher and composer who, among other distinctions, may be the foremost authority on nail shaping.  (Very essential to us classical guitarists!).

I’m also a certified teacher of Alexander Technique, having studied with Michelle Obrecht and Missy Vineyard.  My approach to teaching and playing is largely based on this method of improving posture and movement.

I enjoy helping people through the beginning stages of playing, showing them the ropes, and pointing them in the right direction.  Studying with someone from the beginning can save a lot of time, frustration, and confusion.  I’ve had a very broad musical education encompassing a variety of styles and schools of thought; I hope to make this information and experience available and useful to you.  For those who are more advanced but looking to take further steps in their playing, I hope that my formal musical training and knowledge of Alexander Technique will open new avenues for you.
