Frequently Asked Questions
How should I prepare for my first lesson?
Dress normally, in comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. We will be doing basic activities like sitting and standing. Part of the lesson is spent lying down in a resting position.
You may wish to read some articles about the Technique online as an introduction, but this is by no means required.
Do I have to be in shape or physically fit?
You won’t be doing anything physically demanding; indeed, you will probably find that using the Technique makes it easier and less demanding to move. Each lesson is tailored and adapted according the student’s activity level and ability.
Can people of all ages do AT?
Yes. The elderly will find Alexander Technique particularly beneficial, as it helps restore balance and mobility.
Is this like yoga?
Both yoga and Alexander Technique train the student to pay close attention to his/her body, deepening self-awareness and mindfulness. Generally, they both seek to improve one’s physical and mental condition.
Alexander Technique is geared toward improving one’s functioning in daily activity, rather than being a separate activity unto itself. AT is not really about exercise or poses, it’s more aimed at training movement on a basic, fundamental level. The student gains a refined way of using their body, which can then be carried into any activity, including yoga.
How does Alexander Technique compare to massage and other forms of bodywork?
The type of touch is probably the distinguishing feature of Alexander Technique compared to other types of bodywork; there is really no pressure or friction. It is a much gentler type of touch that is more about “communicating” a change, in cooperation with the student, than adjusting or manipulating. Also, Alexander Technique is as much educational as it is therapeutic.
Why is it called a “lesson”?
Using the term “lesson” emphasizes the educational nature of AT. It’s not simply something done to you; rather, it’s something that is done cooperatively where the student is actively involved in the learning.
How often are lessons/ how many will I need?
Lessons are typically taught on a weekly basis. Length of study depends on many factors such as what you hope to get out of lessons, the type and severity of any problems you want to address, and how in-depth you want to learn the Technique. Within two or three lessons you should get a sense of whether or not it is for you. Twelve lessons is a good number to cover the basics of the method, and to see significant, lasting results. Many people continue beyond that, or reduce the frequency to once a month or so. Most people will tell you that AT work is relaxing and refreshing, and some people come in for that reason alone.
How much do lessons cost?
$40. Sliding scale available.
